Let’s be honest, if ever there was a friend worth forsaking, it would be Gort. I’ve read Darken many times, and I still conclude that he has no redeeming qualities worthy of mention.

It’s important for every member of a party to have their own motivations. Keeps the story running if the Currently Designated Protagonist gets a bad case of being dead, or imprisoned, or otherwise incapacitated, and makes sure they don’t get to run everything into the ground with their own particular neuroses.
Plus, these are not the kinds of people to run themselves into danger to help an old friend, even if he follows through on that reward for making him god-king of the world. It’d be stupid to rely on that, and everyone here has at least two brain cells to rub together.
